Meet & Greet Car Hire

Posted on October 1, 2013 by . 0 comments

Meet and Greet car hire facilities tend to be in place at airports when there is only a limited amount of space available for car hire company desks.

To keep costs down some car hire companies will base themselves off airport (typically within 1-2 miles) and collect their customers from the airport when they land. This is known as ‘Meet & Greet’.

The larger companies such as Hertz will sometimes run regular shuttle bus between the airport and their car hire desk. Hertz have such a bus in operation at Heathrow.

What is a Car Hire Voucher?

Posted on September 29, 2013 by . 0 comments

When a car hire company refers to your ‘voucher’ they are referring to the paperwork required for you to collect the vehicle. This should have been provided to you by the company you booked your vehicle with.

The voucher will contain details of where to collect your vehicle from along with the terms and conditions of rental. It is not always essential to have your voucher with you but you are advised to print a version prior to travelling to ensure smooth collection of your rental car.

Can I rent a car without a credit card?

Posted on September 3, 2013 by . 0 comments

There are very few, if any these days, suppliers who will let you rent a car without a credit card to secure a deposit against. A debit card will not do, the supplier stipulate it must be a credit card.

Its also worth noting that the card must be in the name of the main driver. For example, if you are driving the vehicle yourself you cannot use the credit card of a spouse.

In short, if you wish to hire a car you are going to need a credit card in your name.

Alamo operate an Alamo Gold policy in the USA which is essentially an extras package offering:

  • Full to empty fuel policy
  • 3 free additional drivers

Before taking out the Alamo Gold policy first calculate how much it is costing your for the duration of your rental. The car hire desk will often quote a ‘per day’ price to make the policy seem cheaper than it is. You will also need to be aware of the fuel policy if you do not take out the Alamo Gold cover. For example a lot of Alamo vehicles have a full/full fuel policy as standard which means you simply return the vehicle with a full tank when you return it. If you are not expecting to use a full tank of fuel, that would be the best fuel option to take. However if you are driving long distances and sharing the driving, the Alamo Gold policy may prove worthwhile.

Posted on December 21, 2012 by . 0 comments

When making your car hire reservation online there are certain extras which are ‘payable on arrival’. This means you pay for them at the car rental desk when you collect your vehicle rather than pre booking them. The reason for this is the local car hire desk will manage their own equipment. Typical extras that are paid for on arrival are

  • Child Seats
  • Booster Seats
  • Snow Chains
  • Sat Nav
