Basel Airport Guide
Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is one of the only airports in the world jointly operated by two countries.
It is operated by both France and Switzerland but is administered under French law. France and Switzerland constructed Basel Airport between 1945 and 1946 following a decision on the need for a jointly run airport facility for cargo and passengers.
The bi-national airport lies about 3km beyond the city limits of Basel on French territory and is the second largest cargo airport in France, aside from Paris Charles de Gaulle and is also Switzerland's third largest airport. It is unique in the fact that not only is it owned by two countries, but has two entrances to two different countries too.
Once at Basel Airport you'll find an odd mixture of French and Swiss. There is now a Main Shop that is perfectly adapted to the passenger flow and is the first of its kind in the airport. Passengers can walk into an open spacious luxury area and enjoy a wide assortment ranging from Perfumes & Cosmetics, Watches & Jewellery, Tobacco, Spirits and Food to gifts, confectionery, music and electronics, toys, souvenirs, fashion and accessories. You also have your usual facilities at Basel Airport, including Bank, Bureau de Change, Restaurants, Bars, VIP Lounge and Duty Free Shop.
