Driving in Spain
Spanish drivers are notorious for their lack of road rules and indiscriminate parking. Saying this some of them are quite considerate, however, you will find that they tend to live in the smaller towns and villages. When driving in Spain you will need to be quite aggressive especially in the cities and large towns where some road rules seem to be ignored by most locals. If you drive with a defensive demeanour, you could sit at large islands for hours without moving.
The speed limits in Spain are implemented quite strictly and there are radar traps on all main roads and motorways. Breaking the speed limits will earn an on-the-spot fine, as will not indicating to overtake and pull back in. The speed limit on the motorways is 120km/h although very few locals stick to it. On other open roads the limit varies from 80-100km/h and in urban areas it is 50km/h. A number of the main roads are toll roads and although they can be expensive, they are rarely used by the locals and so can be the safest way to travel long distances through Spain.
Illegal parking in Spain will result in your car being towed away and it is both a hassle and costly to get it back. Other laws in Spain say that you must carry your documentation with you at all times. You must also have a warning triangle and high visibility vest, a replacement set of bulbs and a spare pair of glasses if you require them to drive.
