Guide to France
Just across the English Channel lies France which has roughly the same population as the UK but is twice the size. Chic is the word that best describes France. France gave the world famous cheeses such as Camembert as well as great wines which play an important role in French identity. Eating and drinking are synonymous with France but there is more to this country than gastronomy. France is a country of huge contrasts.
France has three coastlines: the north coast, the south coast and the west coast. The north boasts little coastal towns similar to Cornish villages and, by way of contrast, the hot south coast is famous for its wealth and for the celebrities who regularly visit the area.
In the far south east is the beautiful Provence, known for its rosé wine and balmy Mediterranean climate. Inland France has beautiful rivers such as the Loire and a fascinating network of canals. Unspoilt towns and villages abound and you are sure to find a warm welcome, especially if you attempt to speak French! The Loire Valley, known as the Garden of France, is known for its architectural heritage as 300 chateaux are found in this area.
The capital, Paris, offers everything that you would expect in a cultured, sophisticated city. The nightlife here is second-to-none.
To the east are the borders with Switzerland and Germany. Good, hilly walking country.
Whatever your interest, you are sure to find it in France!
